firefox crash on startup
Just got a new computer with Win 7 64bit. I installed the newest version of firefox, but I cannot start firefox. A process starts for a few seconds, but the browser never appears. I tried to install an older version (pre 30), and that worked, but I cannot get the newest version to work. I tried to follow the "How to get a stacktrace with WinDbg" guide, and have a logfile - parts of it is posted below.

I just installed the beta version of Firefox 33 - and it works! So even though the problem has not really been solved, it is not a problem anymore - I will just run the beta version until Firefox 33 is officially released next week - and hopefully the normal version 33 will also work :-)

We're sorry to hear that your Firefox seems to be crashing when you open it. Please perform the following steps to give us a crash report ID that helps us find out more about the cause of the crash.
- Press the following shortcut to get a Run window: [Windows] + [R]. This should bring up a window that contains a text field.
- In that text field, enter %APPDATA% and press Enter. An explorer window should open.
- From that explorer window, double-click on the Mozilla folder, then double-click on Firefox and then on Crash reports. Double-click on submitted.
- Now, you should see a list of files that contain reports. Go to View > Arrange Icons by > Modified to get the most recent files at the top of the window.
- Open the most recent 5 files with a text editor and copy the IDs.
- Paste each ID with bp- into the reply window on the forums.
Thanks in advance!
You can find more information and troubleshooting steps in the Troubleshoot Firefox crashes (closing or quitting unexpectedly) article.
Thanks for your reply. Actually, it does not even make a crash report - the process just stops without any notice. Than is also why I used WinDbg to get some information on the crash as shown above. However, after I posted, I tried installing the latest esr version of firefox - with this version the program still does not open, but I do get a crash report. I will post them next time I am in my office again. Thanks again.

Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Firefox Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that turns off some settings, disables most add-ons (extensions and themes).
If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu:
- In Firefox 29.0 and above, click the menu button , click Help and select Restart with Add-ons Disabled.
- In previous Firefox versions, click on the Firefox button at the top left of the Firefox window and click on Help (or click on Help in the Menu bar, if you don't have a Firefox button) then click on Restart with Add-ons Disabled.
If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:
- On Windows: Hold the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
- On Mac: Hold the option key while starting Firefox.
- On Linux: Quit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run firefox -safe-mode
(you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
When the Firefox Safe Mode window appears, select "Start in Safe Mode".
If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article to find the cause.
To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.
When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help others with the same problem.
I have attempted to start in safe mode by holding shift when clicking on the shortcut, but the result is the same. I also tried starting windows in safe mode with networking, but firefox still does not start up. It is a clean install on a new computer, so I do not have any extentions installed. I have not been able to start firefox a single time (besides when I tried installing an older version (~29) that worked.

Can you try to install normal Firefox? Download Firefox Full Installer For All languages And Systems {web link}
As suggested, I just installed the normal version (not esr) of firefox (again). Now I it behaves like the last time I installed the normal version, as described in my initial post. A process starts for a few seconds, but the browser never appears, and no crash report is made.
Try safe mode with the normal Firefox.
Some problems occurs when your Internet security program was set to trust the previous version of Firefox, but no longer recognizes your updated version as trusted. Now how to fix the problem: To allow Firefox to connect to the Internet again;
- Make sure your Internet security software is up-to-date (i.e. you are running the latest version).
- Remove Firefox from your program's list of trusted or recognized programs. For detailed instructions, see
Configure firewalls so that Firefox can access the Internet. {web link}
Safe mode still does not Work with Firefox 32.0.3 installed. My Internet security software is up to date, and Firefox was not on the list of trusted programs in Windows firewall - I tried adding it, but it did not change anything.
