Left click once on email account name. Click on 'View settings for this account'. You will get a smaller screen titled 'Account settings'.

If you want to delete/remove the entire account, click on 'Account actions' and select 'Remove account'.

If you want to edit/change settings, change what you want in the 'Account settings' screen. In addition to the screen you start with, there are seven more (Server Settings, Copies & Folders, etc.) which you access by highlighting them. Once you have everything you want, click OK.

This is the problem. In the Accounts screen, left or right clicking on any account gets the same error. I have been a Thunderbird user for years and have never had this issue.

I don't want to insult your knowledge, but just so we are communicating properly, are you clicking in the left pane of the main screen (e.g. *****@gmail.com)?

If so, mark my response as Not Helpful, and someone else will pick it up and help you. I will be gone until the first of the year. Good luck.

If I had an email address I could send screen captures so you can see what is happening. I get the Account Settings box with all the email accounts listed and when trying to select any of the addresses, I get the error message that the account already exists and I cannot change any of the settings for servers, etc.

This still does not work. I cannot set my default outgoing server. Help. I have been able to edit any and all of the account settings in the past. I even restarted with all plugins and extension off. Still cannot edit the account settings.

Click on Outgoing Server (STMP) get the message " 'An account with this name already exists. Please enter a different account name.

Hi Tom, just wonder if you solved you problem (and how) as I have got the same ...

This is my problem too. I don't usually need to edit settings but yahoo or gmail have had temporary problems with their smtp servers, when they do I can simply go to account settings and change from one to the other. Now when I open the account settings window and left or right click on ANY account or setting for an account in the left tree I get the error window with this message:

"The Local Directory path "C:\Users\Len\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\dlcdrtl6.default\Mail\Local Folders" is not suitable for message storage. Please choose another directory."

Clicking OK in the window brings up another message window with the same message as above: "An account with this name already exists. Please enter a different account name."

I cannot exit the account settings box by clicking OK. I need to click cancel. This effectively makes it impossible to change any account settings. This worked a few months ago as I switched smtp servers when gmail had problems, now I'm screwed if I need to.

This is a problem with one of the new versions it should be marked critical as account settings need be configurable and I don't see any workaround like there is for pasting links.

go to the Tools menu (alt+T) > options > advanced and in general select the Config Editor button

Type mail.server in the search.

In the returned list below locate the entries for

mail.server.Server [number].name

You will find two that are the same. Change one of them by double clicking on the entry and Ok the change.

Having removed the duplicate name now you should be able to access the account settings.

I am making this up as I go along. So please advise if I have something wrong.

I have changed the status of this thread from solved so it appears in the list of open topics. If my last posting solves the issue [please mark it solved again.

I'm solved. I posted the problem in Bugzilla: Bug 1157598 and now have it fixed. I couldn't find the fix you referenced, maybe because I'd already renamed a duplicate account. In any event I can now edit account settings. The one anomaly that remains is if I open account settings from the main mail window it still opens with the bottom, now renamed, account selected. If I open it from a write window it opens with the top account selected. I can edit account settings from either window so I guess I'm fixed.

Thanks for the help, Len
