Hello,

I am experiencing crashes every time when Firefox sync starts, either manually from menu or automatically. Sync does not sync at all it just crashes. Same behaviour with both stable and beta from android play store.

Tried reinstalling, and removing android Firefox account. Nothing helps. After few crashes, the sync account stops working, with error "could not sign in" After that Firefox works flawlessly. Then at some time account works again OK but then it crashes again.

Since yesterday tried everything I could think will be helpful, including disable all extensions on my other devices, but nothing seems to help.

Device is a tablet running Android 4.4.4

Thanks for your help!

hello blocker, are you able to enter about:crashes into the location bar, copy the latest few crash report ids from there starting with bp- & paste them here into a forum reply? this would give us a better understanding what may be triggering those crashes. thank you...

hi again, unfortunately it appears that you are hitting bug #964854 with that crash. the recommended workaround in the bug report seems to be to delete the sync account and start again fresh...

Hi, it seems this workaroud does not work for me

I have deleted the account from my PC, creared new account from the PC, and added it on the tablet, and it crashed... Then I have also deleted the newly created account and created one from the tablet, and it crashes, can not even send or resend the verification mail...

thanks for following up on the issue. i had a brief conversation with a sync developer about this issue - there is a prospective fix for this type of crash in firefox 38 (that's codenamed Aurora). however mozilla's developers cannot reproduce the crash reliably and would depend on help of users like you to reliably tackle this issue...

so in case you'd be willing to help out and try firefox aurora, please proceed like this:

  1. go into the android system settings > security menu and enable the option to install .apk files from unknown sources
  2. go to https://www.mozilla.org/mobile/aurora/ click on the download button and afterwards install the .apk file on your device.
  3. then launch firefox aurora from your app drawer and see if you can reproduce the crashes while connected to your sync account.

finally please report back with your results after those steps.

the firefox developer working on this might also be interested to contact you directly about this issue - if you consent to that, please click on my profile and send me a personal message with your mail address. iw ould then forward sthis information...

thank you!

Hi Philipp,

Followed your steps, and installed Aurora, unfortunatelly the same happens, right after I add the sync account, I will leave you PM with my mail.

Here are some of the crash reports

oh i'm sorry, apparently the mozilla website still offered you the link to the old 37 aurora version - the new aurora release is just in the process of being rolled out...

in order to get firefox 38 (which contains a prospective fix) please use this direct download link: https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/mobile/nightly/latest-mozilla-aurora-android-api-11/fennec-38.0a2.multi.android-arm.apk

sorry for the hassle...

were you able to test it with version 38 again?

Hi,

just tested with 38.0a2 and 39.0a1, and I can confirm the problerm still persists :(

Regards

thanks again for the feedback. could you give us a crash report id for those new crashes as well (because the old signature doesn't contain any crashes from 38/39 devices anymore)?

best regards

I also have this issue on a fresh install of Firefox 38.0.1 for Android on Android 4.4.4. I can provide crash report IDs if required.
