I'm trying to set up an email account with Thunderbird on a Windows 10 machine and after entering all the settings I keep getting asked for a new password or to retry whenever I try and get mail.

I've tried other accounts I've set up on other websites from the same hosting company and they all work (I have a reseller's account so all the emails accounts are tied in with that but with different domain names).

The same happens when I try and use the default Mail app that comes with Windows 10 and again, email accounts from other sites don't pose a problem.

The problematic account does work correctly however on the default Mail app on a Mac: I can send and receive on that.

To me it seems that the problem isn't necessarily Thunderbird but something else. However, the hosting company aren't being particularly helpful - in fact the last communication with them listed the first 3 links of what would appear to have been the same Google search I did when I first started researching this.

So any help would be gratefully received. I'm not normally a Windows user but can see that one can obtain troubleshooting info in Thunderbird. I'll post whatever's necessary but didn't want to stuff the start of this thread with unnecessary info.

Thanks in advance for any guidance and help!

My wild and uninformed guess is SSL/TLS is not correctly configured on the server and you are using it.

Other relevant questions are; What SSL certificate provider (there was a situation where some SSL certificate issuers including my favorite StartSSL were blacklisted Is the certificate at least 2048 bits?

What is the domain name? (Mail server name as well if different)

Hi, Matt, Thanks for the reply.

I've no idea who provides the certificate and certainly no idea of the number of bits. I have to confess total ignorance in this department.

A bit more info regarding the reseller account I have: it's with site5.com and in the past, whenever I've set up email accounts with accompanying domains, there's not been a problem. There is no SSL certificate per site - this is all following their general instructions on how to set up IMAP accounts within their resellers thing. Does that make sense?

The domain name is greathoughtonparishcouncil.co.uk and the mail server name is r8-london.webservers.com.

Sorry this is a bit vague.

Ok, I think the server has an issue. I did some tests and the domain was unable to receive mail. See here That the testing software is unable to connect to the mail server in DNS indicates you have more work to do on the server ens of things.

I also checked the SSL/TLS status of the web site. Not good. It is not a HTTPS site and the certificates used will generate errors as they do not match the site domain. See here I mention this as there is a push to secure all web site with SSL/TLS. new versions of chrome and Firefox automatically attempt to connect to SSL sites and fall back to non secured. This will change to producing a warning before displaying anything as the project (driven by Google) moves forward. The lets encrypt project is a good source of free certificates and was created as part of this encryption drive. See https://letsencrypt.org/

Amazing- thanks for your time on this, it's really appreciated.

I'll digest all this and send the info to site5 as well. As you may have gathered, my main problem is ignorance and the subsequent lack of technical vocabulary to even able even to ask the right questions!

I'll post the outcome as soon as I know anything.

Once again, thanks.
