When I start my pc firefox will instantly open at least one new window, sometimes up to six (one after another). It will then open them randomly even when I am not using it or I am away from the computer. I have tried a number of solutions including reinstall and changing (creating) profile.

Use one of these to close Firefox if you are currently doing that by clicking the close X on the Firefox title bar.

  • "3-bar" menu button -> Exit (Power button)
  • Windows: File -> Exit
  • Mac: Firefox -> Quit Firefox
  • Linux: File -> Quit

You can check for problems with the sessionstore.js file in the Firefox profile folder that stores session data. When sessionstore.js is deleted you lose pinned tabs and open tabs and you will have to recreate them, so if necessary make a note or bookmark them.

You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.

Hi, thanks for the reply. I have already tried those options with no success. There are no files with "session..." in the profile folder.

I have been through the whole troubleshooting options and none of them have worked.

What is in these unwanted windows?

Hi, The windows are blank. It is just a new window as if I pressed the firefox icon or something like that. But I have not touched anything.

I may even be in the middle of a game on the computer and all of a sudden I will have a couple of new windows open, disrupting the game.

Out of curiosity I done a test to see what would happen if I change my home page. As it turns out when one of these random windows opens it is my home page that it opens to. Not sure that this info helps in any way, but thought I would mention it.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link} by holding down the <Shift> (Mac=Options) key, and then starting Firefox.

A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh). Is the problem still there?

Note that sessionstore.js is only present when Firefox is closed.

It seems to me there is no solution to this problem. I have tried all the troubleshooting suggestions, which includes those mentioned above. (All mentioned above were tried before I posted) I don't know what could be causing it.

Start your Computer in safe mode. Then start Firefox. Try Safe websites. Is the problem still there?
