Messages remain bolded after read
After reading messages, they stay bolded, so I cannot tell which are new and which are read.

Check settings:
- Menu app icon > Options > Options > Display > 'Advanced' tab
- Select 'Automatically mark messages as read'
- Select 'Immediately on display'
What OS are you using? What version of Thunderbird are you using?

I did all this, and my messages are still bolded.
I turned Thunderbird off and then turned on, but messages still bolded.
Interestingly, the only message that it unbolded was your message
I am using Windows 10 - only using for one month since I had to get new computer - was using Windows 7.
Thunderbird 68.5.0 (64-bit)
