I have lost my computer in a lightning strike and had Thunderbird on the old one. I use Linux mint and Thunderbird was preinstalled. But I can't use it because it always asks me for a password. I never used a password on my old computer and so I am stuck with using the web based email. What is the problem? Were do I get that password from? Do I need it at all?

You did use an email password on the old computer, but you entered it once, and Thunderbird remembered it so you didn't have to enter it again. The password in Thunderbird should be the same as the one you use to access that same account using webmail. And yes, you definitely need it -- all public email servers require passwords in order to access accounts.
