Each e-mail address appear multiple times in my address book. I suspect a new instance is created every time I receive a message, even when it duplicates what is already there. How can I limit it to one instance per person?

Thunderbird collects email addresses from "sent" mail, and adds those that are not already in your address book.
. . . but it's adding , again and again, addresses that are already in the address book. How do I stop it from adding more than once?
