Fire Fox - This profile was last used with a newer version of this App - Create a new profile.

After logging into my account, I saw a Fire Fox page showing new features. Upon downloading Fire Fox, I saw the the above message. I didn't want a new profile, but there wasn't an option to close the window and to just continue to use the newer version that was already installed ???

I tried Control / ALT / Delete . Upon restarting it showed the same message! I uninstalled Fire Fox, which surely has not helped things.

Am I able to restore the profile from the "newer version"? Otherwise, I will probably have to setup Fire Fox from scratch and have lost all bookmarks.

Thanks so much for your assistance. Myles

HI Myles, hopefully when you uninstalled, if you were offered the opprotunity to wipe your data, you did NOT wipe your data.

Do you have any version of Firefox installed right now? If so:

Determining Current Firefox Version

You can copy/paste the detailed number from the Troubleshooting Information page: Use the Troubleshooting Information page to help fix Firefox issues.

The current releases are:

  • Regular: Firefox 136.0.1
  • Extended Support Release: Firefox 128.8.0esr

Determining Last Firefox Version(s)

Each Firefox profile has a file storing the last version of Firefox that used/upgraded it. Here's how to check on those:

Type or paste this shortcut into the Windows search box or the address bar of a Windows File Explorer window, and submit that:

%APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox

That should expand to the hidden path:

C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox

This folder should contain a folder named Profiles. Go ahead and double-click into Profiles.

This is where you might want to start taking notes in a Word doc or in a new post.

There are usually at least two folders here, with names ending .default and .default-release. You might have a third one. Or more.

In each of those individual profile folders, open the compatibility.ini file (for example, in Notepad or any other text reader) and make a note of this information:

LastVersion=135.0.1_20250216192613/20250216192613 LastOSABI=WINNT_x86_64-msvc

That example indicates Firefox 135.0.1 for 64-bit Windows. What do yours say?

Hi Jscher, Thank you so much for responding and your assistance.

Unfortunately, I used Glary utilities to delete Fire Fox and it did not ask if I wanted to save the data. (I won't be doing that again!)

I had also tried to recover windows from a prior date. The following folder "Old Fire Fox Data" is on my desktop. It shows the following, but it refers to March 11th which isn't helpful. e0qgyvjd.default-release-1741711388040

I read your instructions to find the Profile files and to determine the prior build version.

I haven't been able to proceed with this yet, but before doing so, which may test my abilities, what are your expectations in regard to recovering data?

I'm up and running with Firefox 136.0.1, which was the version that was automatically updated yesterday, (until the Firefox page enticed me to download the "latest and best" features). I have some older backups of bookmarks, but this isn't such a problem either.

I'm still getting the onscreen message that my prior Profile refers to a newer version of Fire Fox. Is there way to fix this without trashing my current version?

Thanks again and regards, Myles

I don't know how destructive it is, so let's not give up hope yet.

I had also tried to recover windows from a prior date.

Did that complete? I'm not sure whether it went through or not.

That would be the folder that was in use just before the last time you used the Firefox "Refresh" feature (sometimes called a Tune-up or Reset). If you look in its bookmarkbackups folder, what date range is covered by the backups? The file names should have their creation dates.

Don't trash or uninstall anything. Since I don't know what Glary and Windows did, you just have to look and see what's there.
