recent pages won't close, even after I close Firefox.
I try to close and re-open Firefox only to find the most recent two or three pages have reappeared on the screen. I keep closing them but they won't stay closed. I've restarted twice with no effect; even shutting the computer down doesn't fix it. Same pages keep showing up on the screen. I cleared history and cleared cache without result.

Are they set as home pages? See How to set the home page.
On the same part of the options dialog that you set the home page, check the setting "When Firefox starts", if you prefer Firefox to start with a blank page change it to "Show a blank page"
