When I click to download Firefox update, as strongly recommended, Firefox tries to connect to update server but nothing happens, even if left all day. Firefox works fine otherwise, no problems.

When link is clicked on, a grey box appears titled "Downloading Update" Beneath it says "Downloading the update..." Then, a continuous grey "barber's pole" for the timing/downloading. Underneath it says "Connecting to the update server...", but it never does connect, so download never starts.

any answers on this? its a rather annoying issue

Yours is the first response I've had, so no answers to the question yet.

If you have problems with updating or with the permissions then easiest is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.

Download a new copy of the Firefox program and save the DMG file to the desktop

  • Trash the current Firefox application to do a clean (re-)install
  • Install the new version that you have downloaded

Great, it really was that simple. I was terrified of losing all my bookmarks, passwords and add-ons, but everything was there when I opened up with the new Firefox. (PS I am on a Mac). By coincidence, yesterday, I also updated my PC laptop to Firefox 4 and, though it said one of my webmaster add-ons was incompatible, it automatically did a search and simply updated it and everything is fine on that too. So I urge everyone with this problem, just chuck the old one, if it won't update, and get the new one!
