Despite all my research and best "tricks", I can not get Firefox to remember my passwords...any suggestions?
I have used the automated help and tried everything they suggested. I also tried checking the remember passwords box in tools/options/security, all that happens is that it somehow unchecks itself. I am at a loss for how to fix this, could use any help I can get.

If that box gets unchecked then you have an extension or security software doing that.
Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
- Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
