Before upgrading to 9.0.1, a small icon appeared on the right side of computer, telling me site was safe. How do I tell site is safe now? Also, who are all of these Thawte, Geo Trust, etc. (companies?) that verify sites? Who to trust?

Thanks for the reply. I appreciate the information. My very basic question is this: Where do I look to see that I am on a secure site? Besides the https I used to have a mozilla icon that appeared on the right side of the screen showing that I was secure on that website. Now that I have upgraded to 9.0.1 I do not have that icon. What do I look for to know I am secure?

In Firefox 4 and later you no longer have the Status bar that showed the padlock in previous Firefox versions.
The padlock only shows that there is a secure connection and doesn't guarantee that you are connected to the right server.
So you might still be connected to the wrong server if you make a typo in the URL and someone has claimed that mistyped URL.
The functionality of the padlock has been replaced by the How do I tell if my connection to a website is secure? on the left end of the location bar.
