when I click on a link to a pdf in websites, a window opens showing me folders in my own desktop. The pdfs open just fine when I use Explorer, so this is unique to FF. My version is up to date

Could you check to see how Firefox is set to handle PDFs? It sounds as though you might have it set to save automatically.

orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Options > Applications

Loading the list can take a while. Once it loads, type or paste PDF in the search box above the list and pause while Firefox filters it. Then, on the right side, could you try a different option?

I noticed you have two different versions of the Adobe PDF (Adobe Acrobat) plugin: 10.1.9 and 11.0.04. You probably should disable one of those. See whether you can do that on the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a
  • orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Plugins. Then, to disable a plugin, set it to "Never Activate".

I re-loaded (re-set?) ff and it cleared up the problem
