Have just come to FF from Opera V12. In Opera, the number of Speed dial spots was customisable and each spot is linked to a particular web site. how do I set up firefox to do this ?

hello Brodo, you can drag and drop bookmarks or items from your history into the speeddial spots on the new tab page and they will be pinned there...
