Why aren't my emails removed from the gmail server when I delete them from my inbox?
I'm using POP on Thunderbird version 31.7.0 . I have set the checkbox "Leave Messages on Server" and checkbox "Until I delete them". (Some blogs say that the message is "Until i delete or move them from inbox" but my option only says "Until I delete them". Perhaps it's an issue of the version.) When I delete a message from my inbox, it is NOT removed from the gmail server inbox. This means I have to delete them in two places which is a pain, and I'll likely try a different email program if I can't get this fixed. Can you please help me in PLAIN English. I'm not a techie.

I read the email in Thunderbird then deleted it. I compacted the folders. I then went to the gmail inbox and refreshed, but the email is still there. Have I done all the steps in the right order or is there something else I'm missing?

Have you compacted your folders ?
Compact the Inbox: Right click on Inbox and select 'Compact'
compact all folders: File > Compact Folders

Okay so the problem might be that I'm looking at the gmail All Mail folder and not the Inbox at all. User error. Thank you for your help.
For the benefit of anyone visiting this page: Gmail All Mail folder is gmails archive folder. It keeps copies of all your emails. I believe all emails are stored in All Mail and they apply labels so that the email 'appears' to be in various folders. More info on All Mail:
