I went to http://www.dropbox.com and a window popped up saying that I was using an outdated version of Firefox (39) and I should update immediately. I canceled out went to check my version, and yes it is version 39 but I was told it was the current version. Perhaps Dropbox was talking about the Windows version of Firefox?

Chosen solution

Maybe someone figured out a way to generate misleading messages out of Dropbox to entice you to install malware... Excellent instinct not to do it.

I should mention that false update notices also can be generated by extensions, do you might want to review your list. You can open the Add-ons page using either:

  • Command+Shift+a (Windows: Ctrl+Shift+a)
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Extensions. Then cast a skeptical eye over the list on the right side and, if in doubt, disable.

Often a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.

No new extensions, just the same ones I've had for the last year so that wasn't the cause. It hasn't happened again s o it might have just been a fluke.
