When I open Thunderbird, I get two copies running simultaneously

I open Thunderbird and two copies are launched simultaneously -- exact duplicates doing the same things. I can switch from one to the other without a problem and when I close one copy, both close.

I suspect at some point you opened a second window. Close one of them using the "X" in the top right. Then do file | exit. Now start thunderbird. hopefully you will have one window only

ok, I would LOVE to try this but if I close one window (with the 'x') the other one closes too. How am I supposed to access the 'file' menu when the program is closed?

I also get this message on one of the launch screens, but it displays while the program is downloading messages and the program works fine -- I just get two launch screens like I launched the program twice. I click OK and the error message goes away.

"The account joepalazzo@bellsouth.net is being processed. Please wait until processing is complete to get messages."

I would swear to you that I have at least tried that solution twice without success, but I did it again and it worked. The only conclusion I have is that I did the procedure in reverse order or that I closed the wrong window with the "X" first. However, it seems to be working now and I want to thank you for your help very much -- this was one of those . . .

ok, I would LOVE to try this but if I close one window (with the 'x') the other one closes too. How am I supposed to access the 'file' menu when the program is closed?

This does not make sense to me. Please tell us... 1. Is your problem gone? 2. If it is not gone, does starting Thunderbird in safe mode help https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/safe-mode ??
