Nothing in Thunderbird has changed including the SMTP server. I did install the latest version of BitDefender (2017) and I'm suspicious, but BD is not scanning outgoing mail as far as I can tell.

I have tried everything suggested: I have disabled all addons, deleted the account and re-established it several times. This is an imap account with an app password (and I'm not getting a password rejected message).

Other gmail accounts work; this one (my MAIN gmail account) does not. I'm stumped.

Thunderbird's safe mode or your OS's safe mode? Have you tried both?

I solved it by completely uninstalling Thunderbird and reinstalling it. Works fine now. A bit annoying to have to re-establish all my address books and my 8 or so profiles, but at least it works.

So solved. Not sure how to mark it solved
