Why does Thunderbird "hang" for seconds, minutes or even hours, every time I launch it and every time a new message comes in? (win10)

I've already gone through all of the suggestions related to indexing. I sometimes get a progress bar at the bottom with something like "downloading message 17 or 9877638". It hangs for hours when I restart the computer or restart Thuderbird. It hangs for a minute every time a new message comes in. I'm totally frustrated!

Work through the list at https://wiki.mozilla.org/Thunderbird:Testing:Memory_Usage_Problems - hopefully one of the items will help - and post your results
