I can start Thunderbird in safe mode with my old profile no problems.

I've just moved my profile from a OSX El Capitan system to a new OSX Catalina machine.

Chosen solution

After using Thunderbird in Safe Mode the last few weeks, today it just downloaded an update and fixed itself. Hooray!
