Accents in Thunderbird
How do I insert accents in Thunderbird as I'm composing an email? Some text editing software uses things like Cntrl+: as a precursor to a vowel to give an umlaut over the vowel.
It doesn't work in Thunderbird. (nor here!)

The W10 symbols menu is also available from Windowskey+. (period). ŭăćėéñäë

In the 'Write' window
- Insert > Characters & Symbols
- Choose the category eg: 'accent lowercase'
- choose the letter eg: a
- Choose character eg: à
- click on 'Insert'
- click on 'Close'

Thank you both. I had seen the Toad_Hall answer but it is very tedious compared to the keyboard on my smart phone or the trick using punctuation marks as in TextPad. I was hoping someone would have ported that into an add-on. With the W10 method from sfhowes, I soon created a useful 'most recent' selection though I haven't found the German 'ss' (Beta) in the same sector. Thanks. Mike.
ß is in the S section (see picture).
