I cannot safely purchase any item online because the "padlock" feature is missing from the sites.

I have written about this problem previously. After I downloaded the Firefox 4.1, the padlock icon that appears at a site from which I want to make a credit card purchase is missing. I am unable to safely purchase anything online now. The information I was given previously did not correct this problem. Why would the 4.1 Firefox download eliminate this security feature? And, how can it be corrected?

The whole status bar was redesigned, so now you use the area to the left of the address (green, blue, or plain) to check whether the site is secure.

Other discussions about this change mention an add-on you can use if you really prefer seeing a lock:
