I hit download firefox then it asks to open with archive manager? Should I save, instead? New or upgraded firefox never gets installed. I'm still used to the windows installation method. Please help!!

Which version of Ubuntu are you using?

To install new versions of software, go to Synaptic Package Manager in System->Administration. Search there for "Firefox", and install it.

What you are downloading and opening with archive manager, is a tar-ball archive of Firefox. Installing it is more complicated process than through the Synaptic, so as a new user you are recommended to use Synaptic.
