I find it really annoying to have to enter my master password each time I browse firefox. How can I have firefox only prompt me for my master password when I want to click the "show passwords" tab in Options and not every time I open a new session?

You can't. The master password is used to encrypt the passwords and Firefox will ask for the MP the first time that it is needed and again if the MP has expired after 30 minutes.
