It appears some application or add-on has changed the default behavior of 'new tab' opening about:blank to yahoo search :(.

How can I restore the default behavior? Is there some setting in about:config to specify what to open for a new tab. The old option in options is missing.

Chosen solution

A new tab opens by default as a blank tab (about:blank).

If that isn't the case then an extension has changed that behavior.

You can middle-click or hold down Ctrl and left-click the Home button on the Navigation toolbar to open the Home page in a new tab.

You can look at this extension to set which page to open in a new tab:

That fixed my problem. It also permitted me to restore the default of a empty tab being available without having to use menu / file / new tab.

I'm guessing some application I installed changed the default with its own toolbar, which was later uninstalled. The change wasn't though. I do dislike the pre-clicked add toolbar installers. I guess developers use that as a revenue stream like bloatware on computers :(.

Thanks again
