180.149.246.128:80 117.18.237.29:80 117.239.91.34:80 These are the ips accessed by mozilla firefox on it's own without me opening any site.It is sending some data to them and i can't make out what? Most of the ips belong to Akamai technologies? Is it used by firefox for providing some services or has my browser been affected by malware?

117.18.237.29:80 = tries to download a file
The others don't go to web pages.
Run a mal-ware scan on your system. Also, go to Mozilla Add-ons Web Page and get a good pop-up blocker. Let us know how things turn out.

But I've an updated internet security suite. Moreover these ips are accesses when firefox's default homepage is open.Can it be the result of a pop-up?

Akamai Technologies is a very large content delivery network. It's estimated that their servers handle up to 20% of all web traffic. Therefore it's highly likely and perfectly natural that you will come across at least one connection to their servers during a browsing session.
