Why do I get three windows when I open Firefox instead of the single home page I had established?

more options

I used to get one tab, my Google Home Page when I launched Firefox. Then one day I downloaded Google Chrome because I was having trouble running an application. After that, when I launch Firefox, I get three tabs, one Gmail, one Google Home Page, and one browser that reads chrome://browser/content/newtab/newTab.xul - Also, I'm getting spammed like mad and I was not before. I have my spam blocker activated. I also downloaded some flip something because I fell for the pop up ad that said it would speed up my download speed. I have since uninstalled Google Chrome and I thought the flip thing, but I'm still getting three windows on launch and way too much spam.

Strange, since Google is unlikely to do that. Maybe it was an bundled installer masquerading as the official one?

To start your clean-up efforts, please check your home page setting. Do you get the 3 tabs when you press Command+n to launch a new window? If so, the extra URLs may be tacked on to your home page setting in the Preferences dialog. These articles describe where to find that. Note that it can be difficult to see the full details of that field due to limited space available, so often it is easier to delete it all and paste in just the URL you want.

Next, please check your extensions, as they can override your settings. I suggest disabling ALL nonessential or unrecognized extensions on the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Command+Shift+a
  • Tools menu > Add-ons

In the left column, click Extensions. Then, if in doubt, disable. (Or if obviously bad, remove.)

Usually a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.

Any improvement?

By the way, regarding the spam, are these email messages coming to your Gmail or other account, or ads injected into pages or separate pop-up windows/tabs?

This was very helpful. I was getting pop-ups in any window. But I have reset Firefox, then restored google as my homepage. Got rid of the unwanted "flip" whatever search window. Now I'll see if the popups are also gone.

Thanks you so much.
