Many emails from people on my contact list are sent to spam, even when they are replying to my emails. This makes no sense. How do I allow all emails from those on my contact list to go to my inbox?

Thunderbird has junk filters. It does not use the word Spam or send things to Spam folders. Check your email providers spam controls or maybe your antivirus filtering.
