IMHO it's a problem that doesn't need fixing. They are doing you a favour by providing an easy to see visual declaration of their worthlessness.

Ah no, you say "old messages". So they have "gone bad"?

I would suspect that the wrong encoding has been applied. They are likely unicode/utf and somehow they are being shown in one of the traditional encodings.
