I can't receive emails via IMAP, but have checked all server settings, have no error messages, and there's no change when I turn off anti-virus
I suddenly can no longer access my GMX account via IMAP.
It's happened since I updated my antivirus program (G Data), but turning G Data off doesn't solve the problem, and I can't see any settings in there that might be causing a problem. (I've even explicitly allowed Thunderbird through the firewall, but that makes no difference.)
There are no error messages and I've checked all my server settings; they're correct. I updated my GMX password and deleted the saved password in Thunderbird, but the prompt for a new password never came, so I can only assume that the process is hanging or being interrupted before the password is requested.
I have restarted my computer, restarted the router, and uninstalled and reinstalled Thunderbird, and none of these things have had any effect whatsoever.
The effect is that the toolbar at the bottom shows "Connected to imap.gmx.com..." but nothing else; the process seems to freeze there without generating any log or error message that I can find at all.
Can anyone help?
Thanks!

I think you need to adjust the settings in G Data so it is not scanning email or email connections, either through the antivirus component or the antispam one. This is standard practice with TB, and it still leaves the overall real-time antivirus protection in effect.

If you still have problems in Windows normal mode, it suggests there's still some G Data component that needs attention.

Start Windows in safe mode with networking and see if TB works properly. This is the best way to check if G Data is causing the problem, as sometimes merely 'turning it off' in normal mode is not sufficient to suppress all effects.

Okay! Excellent, it works in safe mode!
So do I now start G Data, still in safe mode, and try again? (Sorry if I'm being a pain - I haven't done this kind of thing before and I'm not sure how to proceed.)

Ah, that's great - thanks! Switching off email scanning altogether fixed the problem immediately. Hurrah!
Thanks again!
