Log in to the your email service provider's webmail interface and check if the messages are still there. Make sure to look in the Trash/Bin/Deleted Items folders as well.

How so?

We have no idea what issues you had with your account, whether in or outside Thunderbird, and not even you know exactly what you did or didn't do to get in this situation. Not knowing what you did or didn't do, within or outside of Thunderbird, the best possible recovery path I can think of is to re-download the messages from the server IF they are still there.

Perhaps you wanted a Yes | No answer to your question;

is this something i can perform some form of recovery or are they lost forever

The answer is YES and/or NO.
