Firefox is so slow after i updated. I love the idea of extensions and adaptability, but it just seemed to get slower and slower?

As of version 10, I am getting more and more annoyed with the decrease in speed and the increase in sheer amount of memory it occupies. Using only a few addons (Adblock Plus, Always on Top, DownThemAll!, IE Tab 2 and Modify Headers) I feel that Firefox uses a far too big part of my 8 gigs of memory... sometimes even freezing and forcing me to close it via task manager. what can be done?
