Upgrading FF without hassles

more options

i have spent months if not years getting FF to work without crashing. i'm using 3.6 on my 5 machines. Now I am told I have to upgrade if I want to use a certain product. I have NO desire to go through what i have done to get FF right the way it is now. is there a way to upgrade and test and roll back to what I have now. i would rather not use the application than spend the time making FF stable again. I am using thinkpads R52/T60 with 2 g ram 80-120 G HD and XP and Win7

I am rather interested in what and why you had to, as you said, spend "months if not years getting FF to work without crashing". would you mind elaborating on that?

Now I can tell you that the new versions of Firefox (Version 11 right now) are designed with more stability in mind. From killing crashes to reduce resource usage to improved performance, they are an all around more stable upgrade. Also, Firefox 3.6 will be dropped from support in a few weeks, meaning it will no longer receive any security or stability updates.

you can test Firefox 11 out by downloading it from www.getfirefox.com, installing it over your current version and starting Firefox up. If you run into problems, please let me know and we'll resolve them for you.

If you do need to revert to Firefox 3.6 temporarily, use http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all-older.html to download it.

TY

if I go inot too big a rant I'll be called a troll. Suffice to say that 1.5 was about the last good version. And it can be seen by the fact that FF has lost to Chrome. I fought memory problems. resource problems. My old Commodore 128 at 9600 was faster at times.
Sync is useless. I ended up with 3500 bookmarks an d1500 tags. right now on this machine as long as i start it over once a day FF works fine. With the same tabs open it will go from using 400k memory to over 1 gig. I also have trouble with scripts which i thought was over. I originally thought it was an issue with Evernote but they are starting up all over the place. have the same problem with Thunderbird which they are slowly destroying, It was ROCK solid till the last few upgrades. Plug in container was a hassle and i unplugged that thing.

I think it would be much better to write good code than write routines around problems. Also think a stable product is better than one full of skittles and unicorns. Somewhere in computerdom there is this idea that all people set behind a desk with their computer. And after all FF is free except if you count the time you spend getting it to work. The average browser probably really costs hundreds of dollars. My computer is in the shop by my workbench. I use it for research not playing games and don't have time to spend getting things to work all the time. I can't put out a product the customer has to tweek to get satisfactory results.

So that is my two cents

T Thanks for the links. If I get time i will work with them. I would really like to have FF on my machines and forget about it and be glad on how well it works.

Slim
