I forgot to properly export bookmarks from Firefox before wiping my computer. After re-installation of my computer, I recovered a bookmarks-(date).json file, but when I opened it up it was all special characters and unicoding.

Is there a way to convert it to a workable JSON file or HTML bookmark file?

You can't just open the JSON backup file by dragging it onto the Firefox window, or by using the Open File item under the Firefox button menu. It must be restored from the Import and Backup button in the Library window. See the following article for details.

That's also where you'll find the option to export the current set of bookmarks as an HTML file.

How did you recover that file?

Can you attach a screenshot of a part of the file to show how it looks?

Use a compressed image type like PNG or JPG to save the screenshot.

A JSON backup will show as one long text line without line breaks and a HTML backup as a web page with clickable links.
A JSON backup starts with: {"title":"","id":1,"dateAdded":
