Whenever I open Firefox my homepage shows up, but so does a new tab. Every time i click on a link or a new site a new tab pops up. How do i stop this from happening?

Is the additional tab blank? If not, what is on it? That might help track down the cause.

You can check the home page setting:

  • Tools > Options > General > Startup: Home page

Firefox supports multiple home pages separated by '|' (pipe) symbols.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

Did you check the home page (startup) setting?

  • Tools > Options > General > Startup: Home page

I think the suggestion to try Firefox's Safe Mode is a good one. If the problem still occurs in Safe Mode, then we can rule out any of your extensions as the cause of the problem. if it stops in Safe Mode, then you would want to review that list and see which one of those is probably the culprit.
