Reload the webpage while bypassing the cache using one of the following steps:

• Hold down the Shift key and click the Reload button in the navigation toolbar.

OR

• Press Ctrl + F5 or Ctrl + Shift + R (Windows and Linux)
• Press Command + Shift + R (Mac)

Just exactly what have I experienced here? I've been a FF user since the beginning, and have never had a catastrophe like this before. Every time I've migrated in the past, all my data and settings came with it

Did you refresh (reset) Firefox during your update and created a new profile?

This could happen if Firefox reported that it was starting slowly.

When you Refresh/Reset Firefox then a new profile is created and some personal data (bookmarks, history, cookies, passwords, form data) is automatically imported. The current profile folder will be moved to an "Old Firefox Data" folder on the desktop. Installed extensions and other customizations (toolbars, prefs) that you have made are lost and need to be redone.

It is possible to recover data from the "Old Firefox Data" folder on the desktop, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over problems.

• bookmarks/history: backups in the bookmarkbackups folder and possibly places.sqlite if you really need the history
• other SQLite files like cookies.sqlite (cookies) and formhistory.sqlite (saved form data)
• logins.json and key3.db (decryption key) for Passwords saved in the Password Manager
• permissions.sqlite and possibly content-prefs.sqlite for Permissions and Site Preferences
• cert8.db for stored intermediate certificates (Certificate Manager)
• sessionstore.js for open tabs and pinned tabs and tab groups

I refreshed after I realized that the new FF installation was not using my old settings, bookmarks, etc

Fortunately I save my FF and TB data weekly in Dropbox so I finally just reloaded my last archived data points rather than fight all this

I would really like to know what it is I experienced when all this happened, and to make sure the Moz developers know to not do it again. I'm not a newbie to computers or browsers, but I have no idea what occurred or why. I'm assuming it was some form of update to FF

Not sure whether this might apply to you, but sometimes after a system update, Windows seems to start up with incorrect/incomplete permissions and that affects Firefox's access to your settings. Usually shutting down and restarting Windows fixes it. I wish we had more information, but by the time people post on support they usually have tried several other things first and it's difficult to return to that point in time.

That's what happened with me that started all this, and I ended up refreshing and then reloading all my Add-ons and Bookmarks, Cookies and PWs from archives I keep in Dropbox.

I have no idea how I had gotten Tabs on top of everything to begin with. I don't think I had Classic Theme Restorer before, but I do now and it doesn't move Tabs above the menu bar. It puts Tabs either between the Menu Bar on top and the Nav Bar on bottom, or under the Nav Bar. So I'm still suck with Tabs not on top of everything as I want them

I'm not very helpful with this kind of customization; I only display the menu bar on demand (for example, Alt+f for the File menu). Hopefully another volunteer knows the ins and outs of CTR or another way to move the Menu Bar where you want it.

I think you would have to use code in userChrome.css to reorder the toolbars that way by giving them the appropriate -moz-box-ordinal-group property.

Add code to the userChrome.css file below the default @namespace line.
