Macbook with problem is new 2015 model, runs OS X El Capitan

Older computer (2011 model) where old emails appear fine is Macbook Pro, runs also OS X El Capitan

Have tried to set up Library folder in Users folder in Macintosh HD. When placed in there, older email folders have extensions like .snm and cannot be read by Thunderbird.
