Will a Firefox ESR Installation on version 52.x ESR with auto-update enabled automatically update to ESR 60.0 on May 9, breaking apps that use the Unity Plugin?

I work for a company that has a custom application developed in Unity, which we currently run through the Firefox ESR browser. We had moved all our machines to use ESR, as Firefox Quantum deprecated plugin support, and our application would no longer have worked. Unfortunately, the machines were left with auto-update on, as we made the invalid assumptions that the ESR path would continue to support plugins. On May 8, Firefox Quantum is moving to the ESR path, which will break our Unity application. Will the auto-update for the ESR channel automatically update the browser to Version 60 ESR/ Quantum, or would someone have to manually install it over the 52.x version, since this is a major version change? If the answer is the first, the auto update to 60.x, I have a lot of work to do before May. Thank you!

If you allow updates then it will update to 60.2.0esr.

Those who use WinXP/Vista will not as 53.0 and later versions dropped support as Win7, 8, 10 is needed.

FF can's address addon compatibility that is something you have to direct to the Addon content creator to respond to. FF doesn't test Addons if the creator doesn't test or update then they are responsible to fix their Addon issues. Problem here is if your Unity is custom in house creation is there a reason why it can't be update and tested to insure compatibility with latest FF?

Unity isn't a Firefox add-on, its a separate plugin that has to be installed on the system. Our site then uses the plugin from within Firefox. I believe it is a NPAPI type add-on, which Firefox Quatum does not support, but which the current 52.x ESR versions do support.

Firefox 52.9.0esr out on June 26 (same time as 60.1.0esr) will be the last major update for Firefox 52 ESR apart from any 52.9.x esr updates for security and or allowed stability fixes.

Firefox 60.2.0esr will be out Aug 21 and Firefox 52 ESR will be EOL then. So people will have to upgrade to 60.2.0esr to keep getting security updates if they have not manually upgraded to 60.x.o ESR already.

The word Addon is being misused in ths case as it groups together the separate Extensions, Themes (complete and image), Plugins, search engines, dictionaries, language packs. https://addons.mozilla.org/faq

So when one says Addons it does not refer to say just Extensions.

Will the Firefox 60.2.0esr automatically overwrite Firefox 52 ESR installations set to auto-update on August 21, will the user be prompted with a yes/no to upgrade, or would someone have to run the Firefox 60.2.0ESR installer to overwrite the last Firefox 52 version? Thanks!

Thanks, James. I've got until August to disable auto-update on systems spread across the continent. Still good news for me, as that's a lot better then May! :) Thanks!
