That preference was removed for security reasons - please see this bug report :

The extension that Franz_von_Suppe suggested will do what you want .....

Thank you both, but can I just say, that was a stupid decision on Mozilla's part. Clearly this feature is very much desired since that extension has hundreds upon hundreds of 5-star reviews. Why should I download an entire browser extension to do what a 20 byte string could previously do?

As I said :   that preference was removed for security reasons - hackers abused it. So it was in fact a very wise decision - had the users' best interest at heart ......

Sigh. Please re-enable this. Now I have to use a different browser as these "new tab" addons are not signed.
