I am trying to import my address book that I used in Thunderbird in Windows 7, to Thunderbird in Ubuntu. I have the csv file. I even renamed it Contacts.csv .

I click Tools, Address Book, Tools, Import, Address Books, Next. I select Text file (LDFIF, tab, csv, txt. I click next.

I navigate to my Mail folder where I put the csv file, and the copy of the csv file renamed Contacts.csv.

It doesn't see either of them.

In the system file manager I clearly see both files.

Below see screenshots of the files showing in file manager but not in the Thunderbird import utility.

When I select the folder they're in it just opens the folder and still doesn't see the csv files.

How do I actually import the files?!!

Thank you!

Yours, Dora Smith

When you get to the step in TB where you select the file to import, you have to select Comma separated (csv) in the filter box (see picture), since it defaults to LDIF files. At least, that's how it works on Windows. Once you select csv in the drop-down, the csv files are available to select.

It doesn't allow me to select a subtype of text file. Just "Text file (LDFIF, .tab,.csv,.txt) The other choice is vcard file (.vcf)

From there it takes me to select the file.

And the kind of separator used in the file is not the issue. It isn't seeing any csv files at all! Look at the pictures I posted. In my file manager you see the csv files. But when I look for them in Thunderbird import facility it does not see any csv files. And if you select the whole folder it just opens that folder.

I'm afraid I don't use Linux, and so I can't explain why your TB doesn't show the csv files, even when you select Text file, or even All files (*.*) is not an option. It might be a peculiarity of the version of TB offered by Ubuntu, which is not in the Linux version provided by TB.

I have version 60.8.0 64 bit, Thunderbird designed by Mozilla, and the page you sent me to says that's the current version.

What are you talking about? Ubuntu might have an out of date version, but it doesn't have a different version of Thunderbird's than Mozilla! And clearly my version is up to date. Since you don't use Linux, would you even have any idea?

How do I report a bug to the experts? Obviously no expert is going to answer my problem here, and noone else is going to solve my problem.

There being no solution forthcoming, I filed a bug with Mozilla.

It turned out that the problem is, that after you select text file, when it brings up the screen to select your address book file, WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY at the bottom right of the screen, far from anything else, in TINY letters, is LDIF next to an arrow. You're supposed to SEE that, I didn't, and neither has anyone else who has ever been told to use it, and choose comma selected csv. When you do that, voila, your csv files magically appear.

That's ridiculous. I"m having an argument on the bugs report forum, because those idiots can't see what I"m talking about! And I posted a PICTURE.

The instructions need to specify that people need to go wAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY to the bottom right of the screen and find the word LDIF in TINY letters, and click on it to select comma selected csv file. They don't specify that.

That's what people complaining of this problem need to be told. Until Mozilla grows heads and fixes it!
