Unread message count in preview pane is incorrect

After deleting a number of messages the preview pane shows 4 messages as being unread when there are no unread messages. The count goes up when there are unread messages and back down again when they are read but always returns to 4 when there are none. The count has got out of sync somehow. How do I reset the count to zero?

right click the folder, select properties and then the repair button.
