Good afternoon. I am using the most current version of Firefox (88.0.1) and have Windows 10 64-bit. I have my mouse configured so that if I am on the desktop to open a folder I only have to click once instead of twice. Not too long ago in Firefox if I click a link two duplicate tabs open occasionally instead of one. Not every time I click a link or even in every session but just from time to time. It never happened before and I haven't changed any mouse settings. It is very random and does NOT happen with Edge, just Firefox. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Sometimes immediately closing FF then restarting it, seems to put it back in order.

You can also try a different mouse in case there is a (hardware) problem with the mouse buttons.

Thanks for responding. So is it a problem that has happened to others also? Then when it happens if I restart do you think it would matter if I 'restored previous session' and then just closed the duplicate?

I will try that as well. Thank you.

If two tabs open then this is usually either a problem with the mouse or you have an extension that is causing this as the first to check.

Yeah, it happens to others too. Like for me, on yesterday, all of a sudden when i clicked on a book mark it would open up in a new window instead of a new tab. After 45 seconds of examining whether or not i was going coo coo, i found it was FF.

So turning it off and on straightened it out.

In regards to the coo coo-ness you are experiencing, its hard to say what the cause could be. But if doing the off/on routine helps, then do it.

You know what you can try as a test is to temporarly create a new virgin profile and see if is more stable than the current default profile. If you think the new profile is the trick you need, then you may hav solved your issue.

to create a new profile go to the following url, then find/click on the create button:

Does this happen if you open a link from within Firefox in a new tab or does this happen if you open a link from an external application in the default browser (Firefox) ?

It usually happens when I open a link within Firefox itself, at least that I have noticed. I did change to a new mouse last night and hopefully that solves the problem. However since it is not a consistent issue I have to give it a couple of days to see if it happens anymore. If it does I will try the on/off routine.
