I don't like the search window feature. I figured out how to get rid of all but one search engine. But I want the feature gone. How do I get rid of it? The instructions I found didn't work.

If you do not want to see the search bar then open the customize window and drag the search bar from the Navigation Toolbar in the toolbar palette.

Open the Customize window via "View > Toolbars > Customize" or via "Firefox > Options > Toolbar Layout"
