As soon as I close the customize toolbar pop up the icon on my toolbar goes away. How can I get the bookmarks icon to stay on my toolbar to the right of the home icon?

Two things can cause the Bookmarks button to "go away" from the Navigation Toolbar when the Customize mode is closed"
1. The Menu bar - with File, Edit, View, etc - is showing.
Since you marked cor-el's first answer as solving your issue I haven't expounded on that item.
2. The Bookmarks Toolbar is showing, and that button is on that Toolbar.
Is the Menu bar showing or not?
Did you try the Reset toolbars and controls that I mentioned?

Hide the Bookmarks Toolbar and the Bookmarks icon will be next to the Home icon. Or move the Bookmarks icon to anywhere except for to the right of the Home icon.
That didn't work. When I right click the bookmark icon appears where I want it, to the right of the home key, when I close the pop up the icon disappears.
You need to hide the menu bar to make the Bookmarks Menu button appear.

This did not take care of my problem but thanks for trying.
You will only see the Bookmarks Menu button on the Navigation Toolbar if the Menu bar and the Bookmarks Toolbar are hidden. If the menu bar is hidden and the Bookmarks Toolbar is visible then the Bookmarks Menu button will appear on the Bookmarks Toolbar.
If that isn't the case then see http://kb.mozillazine.org/Corrupt_localstore.rdf
Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
- Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

Thanks for the info but I've always had the bookmark icon on the navigation toolbar. I had to redownload the other day and I can't get it back.
Did you try to reset the toolbar customization?
See:
This has worked the same since Firefox 4.0 was released back in March, when the 2nd Bookmarks button came about.
When you have the Bookmarks Toolbar showing, the Bookmarks button appears on the right-side of the Bookmarks Toolbar. When the user hides the Bookmarks Toolbar, that Bookmarks button automatically moves to the right-side of the Navigation Toolbar - where is appears when the Customize Palette is open. (The 1st bookmarks button is sitting in the Customize Palette by default. The 1st button doesn't have the little drop-arrow to the right of the bookmarks button, otherwaise they are identical except for the wording when they're in the Palette.)
If you want that Bookmarks button to be on the Navigation Toolbar when the Bookmarks Toolbar is being displayed, you need to move that button from its default location on the Navigation Toolbar when you're in the Customize mode.
That Bookmarks button has special properties that no other Toolbar button has, and it "moves" itself depending on whether or not the Bookmarks Toolbar is set to be displayed.
Thank you but it doesn't fix my particular issue. I am trying to put the bookmarks icon on the navigation toolbar to the right of the home icon. I do not want a bookmark toolbar.
That Bookmarks button should automatically appear to the right of the Home button when the Bookmarks Toolbar is de-selected, without you having to do anything.
Open the Firefox Safe Mode and use the Reset toolbars and controls option. See if that solves your issue.

View > Toolbars = click on Bookmarks Toolbar so the check-mark for it goes away
I agree, it SHOULD be there. When I right click and select customize, it appear on the navigation bar exactly where I want it. The problem is when I close the pop up, the bookmark icon goes away from the navigation toolbar.
