When several tabs are opened, firebox uses 4-5x more memory than before, slows down everything immediately, making working with firefox a disaster.

hello, it would be useful if you could list your installed extensions. probably one of them is interfering - you could try running firefox in safemode once and see if the high ram consumption is occurring there too.

Restart without add-ons: slight improbement but still unworkable (5 minute delays before a page opens)... Extensions? Only Avast is listed. The new Firefox update is defintely not an improvement!!!

Did you check your security software (firewall) to make sure that Firefox has full access?

A possible cause is security software (firewall,anti-virus) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.

Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

See "Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile":

There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.

If the new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

This is all way too complcated for people without an ICT training. Someone (Firefox) has to spell out why there's such an incredible slow-down after this update. My Firewall hasn't changed. Firefox has. They shoud arrange this or lots of people will change browser.
