allright, I have an Intel Mac using OS 10.5.8 and using Firefox v3.5.17; version 4.0, version 16.0, this is all very confusing??? Will be forced to change soon
I have an Intel Mac using OS 10.5.8, and Firefox v3.5.17. It works fine and I do not want to change as I like Firefox "exactly" the way it is! That said, I will be forced to update soon I'm very afraid. In looking at and trying to update to the latest version, many conflicts have come up. The update consistently brings me to the wrong version for my OS. So, what version will be the latest that will absolutely work for OS 10.5.8? WHY do I find that 4.0X is best then, 16.0!! is the correct one?
Why are the versions so vastly separated?? Nothing makes sense. Please help before I convert to Chrome permanently!
Thank you.

You only have two choices apart from updating to OS X 10.6.8 and that is either Firefox 16.0.2 or the Firefox 10.0.12 ESR version.
In respect to security the ESR version would be the best choice and would go for that version to see if web pages still complain.
In case of complains you can still give 16.0.2 a try.
With older hardware you will always sooner or later hit a barrier and will have consider updating your hardware (i.e. in this case possibly a new computer).

As of Firefox 17.0 the minimum Mac OSX required is 10.6+ as the latest version that the old OSX 10.5.x could support was Firefox 16.0.2. As you have a Intel and dependeing on your hardware specs you could update to 10.6.x

Hello, see also : Common questions after upgrading from Firefox 3.6
Firefox no longer works with Mac OS X 10.5
thank you
A possible option to consider is to install the Firefox 10.0.12 ESR release as that version (BuildID=20130103094221) is more recent than the Firefox 16.0.2 release (BuildID=20121024073032) and thus has more security fixes, but of course misses feature added since Firefox 16.
Thanks, I could not however find what the "look" and features would be with the FF 10.0.12 ESR release. I like the current version I have now, "as it is". I only need the security updates and want the browser to work normally, and my v3.5.17 more often now gives alerts that things won't work soon on it. (hence my inquiry to change) Will 10.0.12 ESR look exactly the same and will updating to it not change anything, id est. tool bar, bookmarks settings etc..?? Updates, as everyone knows, always messes things up. Again, I don't want to change, only when forced to do so, which may come sooner than later. Thank you very much.
