When I right click on a misspelled word, choose languages, I see many languages, some that I installed. When I go to preferences, content, select language, I see one (US English). I understand this is just for use in queries not spell check (is it properly labeled for just that?). I want to trim the dictionary list, and select the default language dictionary for spell check. Since I installed French last, it became the default, but I want US English. I have the latest Mozilla Firefox 26.0 on Ubuntu. Please fix it.

In Firefox

  1. Type somewhere that gets spell checked.
  2. Miss spell a word so that it highlighted.
  3. Right click and select languages from the options listing.
  4. That then lists your dictionary Languages with the selected and current default marked.
  5. Click on on one of the others to select that.

Good answer, but oh so obviously the wrong question.

How to remove dictionaries?

How to set the default?

The method for selecting a specific dictionary to be the default is as detailed in my last post.

Instructions for removing them are given in this article:

If the dictionaries are not in your Firefox add-ons look at your Ubuntu software.

I use 12.04 LTS . Look in your Ubuntu software centre, and use theinstalled lens or the unity dash lens search for language you will get options including to reorder languages or delete them.

You can look in this directory for globally installed dictionaries: /usr/share/hunspell/
