Firefox DAILY crashes

more options

Firefox crashes for me multiple times EVERY DAY. Attached are three reports from the last 3 of 5 crashes this morning, but the first two didn't even give me a report number.

It's very hard to test this in Safe Mode because that doesn't restore my tabs and I need to keep and work in my current set of tabs. I've been experiencing daily crashes for months now and none of the auto-submitted reports seem to get attention.

I will load Firefox into Safe Mode later this morning. Here is a list of those reports from the daily crashes over the last few months, when they've been generated (which doesn't always happen).

Hello,

Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Firefox Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that turns off some settings and disables most add-ons (extensions and themes).

(If you're using an added theme, switch to the Default theme.)

If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu by clicking on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled... menu item:
FirefoxSafeMode

If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:

  • On Windows: Hold the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
  • On Mac: Hold the option key while starting Firefox.
  • On Linux: Quit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run firefox -safe-mode
(you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)

Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode" Safe Mode Fx 15 - Win

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article to find the cause.

To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.

When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help others with the same problem.

Thank you.

Here is today's Firefox Daily Crash, in Safe Mode.

I was incorrect with that, which was nice to see. But I still have this issue.

That last crash report if an out-of-memory issue where Firefox is using up all available memory.

I see that there is a GStreamer process active, probably used by the built-in HTML5 media player.

You can try to set the media.gstreamer.enabled to false on the about:config page to see if that has effect.

And,if that does not work,as told by cor-el,try resetting firefox...by the steps given below...or try a clean reinstall as explained later...

The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information.
Note: This will cause you to lose any Extensions and some Preferences.

  • Open websites will not be saved in Firefox versions lower than 25.

To Reset Firefox do the following:

  1. Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
  2. Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
  3. Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
  4. Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.

Further information can be found in the Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings article.

Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!

Thank you.

Hello,

Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a Clean reinstall. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:

Note: You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.

  1. Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
  2. After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
  3. Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    • Windows:
      • C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
      • C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
    • Mac: Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
    • Linux: If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see Install Firefox on Linux. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder firefox in your home directory.
  4. Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
    1. Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
    2. Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.

More information about reinstalling Firefox can be found here.

WARNING: Do not run Firefox's uninstaller or use a third party remover as part of this process, because that could permanently delete your Firefox data, including but not limited to, extensions, cache, cookies, bookmarks, personal settings and saved passwords. These cannot be recovered unless they have been backed up to an external device!

Please report back to see if this helped you!

Thank you.

Thanks for the tips; I've tried both the Reset and the Reinstall already (a few months ago), but no fix.

I will try the GStreamer setting now, but from what I read, that seems to be a good thing to have Enabled; GStreamer helps prevent the use of Flash, no?

more options

If GStreamer is enabled then you can use the HTML5 media player to play H.264 encoded MP4 media files, so you do not need to use the Flash plugin fallback to play these media files.
For playing media files with Flash on Linux you can consider to use Google Chrome as that version has the latest Flash plugin.
Adobe no longer updates the NPAPI Flash plugin that Firefox uses.

more options

I agree that GStreamer prevents Flash, and Flash causes crashes. But it was suggested that I turn off GStreamer, which seems to me like a way to increase my crashiness, but I've done so to help determine the cause of my crashes.

If I wanted to use Chrome and buy into Google's ongoing tracking, I could, but I'd prefer to stick with Firefox if we can resolve this. I'm open for additional suggestions.
