I have searched twice recently for two different email addresses among my messages and have found 3 messages in one search and 4 messages in the other. I tried to open them as a list so that I could see their locations and move them to a different folder, but only 1 of 3 messages was displayed in one search and none of the 4 messages was displayed in another.

In both searches, a 'must contain' constraint was used to restrict the displayed messages to one person or folder. I don't recall that this problem occurred during other searches when a constraint wasn't used, but I also didn't count to see whether as many messages that were found were also displayed.

Thanks for your help!

That sounds like the global index was not updated when messages were deleted.

goto the help menu and select troubleshooting. now use the show folder button for the profile folder Close Thunderbird Locate the file global-messages-db.sqlite and delete it. Restart Thunderbird

Search will be very hit and miss while the index is regenerated.
